Kinja'd!!!

VW parked next to the Saab, got to chat with the owner for a minute or two.

Kinja'd!!!

It’s a ‘61 with ‘62 tail lights. 40hp motor, more or less original - the body shows signs of an old restoration or at least old respray - despite what it looks like. Motor is immaculate, rebuilt by the previous owner. This guy bought it about six months ago. Reminder that the Beetle is seriously small. The 95 is roughly the same size as the Fit in front of it.

Patina done right. That my dream car- crusty on the outside and a  nice clean engine inside. A 63 ragtop would be the perfect beetle.

Likely with me putting my kids in it I’m willing to go back as far as a 66. Older than that and you are getting 36hp, dodgy brakes, and no seatbelts.. fine if I’m alone but not for the family.

Awesome!  I got a nice wave from a guy in a similar age 300D when I was driving in my 85 Jaguar a couple weeks ago.

The 40hp was new in 1961, ‘60 and earlier had the 36hp and the “stale air” heater. The brakes were basically the same through ‘68 when the dual circuit system was adopted. For the really old ones, ‘58 and ‘59 are my favorites. But if I wanted something that could do duty as a daily, ‘68 or ‘69 would be my choice (dual circuit brakes, 12V electrical, 3 point seatbelts, etc.).

Pretty sure the Beetle is about Fit-sized as well, think they’re both about 161 inches end to end, give or take a fraction.

I guess you’re right. Saab 95 is 169" Honda Fit is 161", VW Beetle is 160"
